Wat leerlingen leren, wordt in wezen bepaald door hun leesvaardigheid. Omdat leesvaardigheid de leerstof ontsluit, is het essentieel om het onderwijs te richten op het succesvol lezen van complexe teksten, van natuurkundeboeken tot geschiedkundige bronnen. We kunnen en behoren ons niet te laten beperken tot simpele teksten. We moeten de lat juist hoger leggen. Maar als we met uitdagende teksten willen werken, moeten we alle leerlingen wel toegang tot de tekst bieden met leesinstructies vooraf.
